Pictoral Pilot will not engage

I have a Pictoral Pilot, it has been installed for about 8 months. I followed the instructions about allowing the Gyro to stablize, which it dose every time but when I try to engage it using the control knob in the air it may or may not engage, mostly not. I have a disengage control on the joy stick, this not only disengages the auto pilot but if pressed will also engage the auto pilot. Could some one please tell me if this is normal and what could be the possible cause of not being able to engage the unit using the control knob

Try completely disconnecting the CWS switch from pin 3 on the back of the Pic Pilot. It's possible there is a short to ground in that circuit somewhere that is engaging CWS mode. Let me know what you find. Thanks!
