The level of spam is frustrating. It seems no matter what I try to do, we get pointless users signing up. The only other option I know to use is to make it where each new user requires approval. I really hate to do that as I would prefer to leave the registration completely open. I activated a new verification tool yesterday, we'll see how that goes over the next week or so. If it continues however, I will have no choice but to individually approve each person.

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Thanks!

Lucas,

You might want to talk to DR at VAF to see how he deals with spammers.
Another suggestion is to use individuals you trust to ***ist you in moderating this board, especially after hours. These moderators can follow a set of rules that you can establish on when to close/delete a thread or post or when to lock an individual's account. With the use of evening moderators and other anti-spammers techniques, I believe that will greatly reduce the spam or at least shorten the time that it appears on the board.

BTW, thanks for establishing this forum. VERY timely for me!

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

That's definitely an idea. For now, this is still in the trial phase. We hope it will really take off as it's a good way to get info out to the m***es in a very quick manner.

So far, it seems my new image verification setting is working. There's only been one erroneous post since I activated it, compared to three or four usually. Thanks!

Lucas,
I've been a moderator on Dougs original Yahoo Rv-8 group for a long time and
we still get bogus users trying to join.
Approving one by one is really the only way to stop these actions.
It's not that much of an imposition for someone to have to wait a short time for an approval if you have a couple of moderators.

(My home page is the site I moderate so when I get on the internet I can see if someone wants to join.)
I'd be glad to help if you need it.
Cheers!

DITTO,

I have 2 forums and we approve each as they sign up. Then we ban the IP addresses as well as the email addresses. Goto v bull.org or vbull.com to get a list of banned emails and ip's. We use http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/lookup-results to check on the addresses. If they lie on the sign-up or have "one of those names or addresses" we delete & Bann them. Haven't had a problem since.

Well, it looks as though we've finally seen the last of the spammers. The addition of the extra question for registration seems to be catching them. :) This has kept me from having to manually approve each new registration, which I didn't want to do to keep the flow of info moving. Thanks for all the great suggestions!
